The Holy Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and the Holy Quran

The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) are such holy individuals who not only believed in the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the religion he brought; but also saw the Quran being revealed, practically observed all aspects of the life of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and were the first to learn and spread the religion from him.

This is the blessed and pure group that Allah, the Almighty, chose and selected for the companionship and companionship of His last Prophet, Hazrat Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him); therefore, the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) are the foundation and standard of faith; rather, if anyone’s life is a standard for understanding the blessed and pure life of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and for acting upon it, then it is the blessed and holy group of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them).

This is the group that benefited from the grace of prophet hood in a right way; therefore, the grace they received and the quality and sweetness of faith they attained were not available to those who came after them. For this reason, if Allah, the Almighty, has praised all the companions of a prophet in the Holy Quran, it is the group of the companions of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Allah, the Almighty, has granted the entire group of the companions a certificate of approval.

The Status of the Companions

From the first century until today, it has been the unanimous belief of the Muslim Ummah, the Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah, that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) are all just and trustworthy, and their consensus is the proof for the Muslim Ummah.

The pure and blessed community of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) is the mirror and the ultimate manifestation of the perfections of the Prophet hood of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in terms of noble habits, praiseworthy qualities, virtuous forms, great morals, and all issues and arguments, facts and manners of the Sharia, both in terms of knowledge and in practice. Following these pure souls can save the Muslim Ummah from misguidance and error.

Islamic thinker Hazrat Maulana Abul Hasan Ali Nadvi (RA) says about the Companions

“This is the history of those men of God who, when the call to Islam reached them, accepted it wholeheartedly and submitted to its demands.

And he placed his hand in the hand of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ); thus, the hardships of the path of Allah became easy for him and the sacrifice of life and wealth became easy; until his belief in it became firmer and finally it permeated his heart and mind, belief in the unseen, love for Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), compassion for the believers, severity towards the disbelievers, preference for the Hereafter over this world, preference for credit over money, preference for the unseen over witnessing, preference for guidance over ignorance and immense desire for guidance of the people began to occur.

The mind-boggling incidents of bringing the servants of Allah out of the slavery of the servants and into the service of Allah, of bringing them from the oppression and tyranny of religions to the justice of Islam, of taking them from the narrowness of this world to the vastness of the Hereafter, and of becoming careless of worldly wealth, pleasures and adornments, of meeting Allah and entering Paradise began to come to light.

They left their homes, said goodbye to comfort and ease, and did not hesitate to sacrifice their lives and property, due to their boundless emotions of disposing of the blessings of Islam, spreading its blessings to the ends of the earth, and sifting the dust of the earth secretly.

Until the foundations of religion were established, their hearts were inclined towards Allah, and such blessed, soul-expanding and powerful gusts of faith blew that established the kingdom of monotheism, faith, worship and piety, the market of Paradise.  It became hot, guidance became widespread in the world, and people began to convert to Islam in droves.

The Greatness of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and the Quran

Here, as a sample, we mention a few verses and their translations; so that an ordinary Muslim reader can estimate the grace and perfection that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) possessed.

Translation: Muhammad (ﷺ) is the Messenger of Allah, and those with him are stern against the disbelievers, merciful to one another. You will see them bowing and prostrating, seeking the bounty of Allah and His pleasure. Their signs are evident on their faces due to their prostration. These are their attributes mentioned in the Torah, and their example in the Gospel is that of a field that sprouts its shoots, then strengthens them, then becomes thick, then stands upright on its stem, so that the tillers are pleased with it.

That Allah may kindle in the hearts of the disbelievers with them. Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds forgiveness and a great reward. (Aasan Translation of the Quran, 3/1575).

Translation: Those who believed, and migrated, and fought with their wealth and their lives in the way of Allah, and those who settled them (in Medina) and helped them, are the guardians (inheritors) of one another. (Aasan Translation of the Quran, 1/550).

Translation: And hold fast to the rope of Allah, and do not become divided among yourselves, and remember the favor of Allah upon you: that you were enemies to one another, then He brought your hearts together, and you became brothers by His grace. And you were on the brink of the pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make clear to you His signs, that you may be guided. (Aasan Translation of the Quran, 1/212).

Translation: It is He who has strengthened your hands with His help and with the believers, and has united their hearts. If you had spent all the wealth in the earth, you could not have united their hearts. But Allah has united their hearts. Indeed, He is the Owner of Power, the Owner of Wisdom. (Aasan Translation of the Quran, 1/546).

Summary of the above verses

There are many other verses on this subject in the Holy Quran; but the summary of the verses we have mentioned is that the believers have a bond of brotherhood and sisterhood, and the believers should hold fast to the rope of Allah Almighty; because Allah has changed the long-standing enmity into love and unity and has now made the believers brothers to each other.

These are the believers through whom Allah supported, helped and supported His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Their hearts were filled with love and affection.  He instilled love and compassion in me, then told me that the first group of believers, the Muhajirin and Ansar, are Mujahidin in the way of Allah, who spend in the way of Allah, who provide shelter to the Muhajirin and support them, who are friends and trustful, helpers and supporters of each other, who are a group of holy and pure people who live in the company of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who are strict towards the infidels and kind, soft-hearted and grateful to each other.

They are busy in worshipping Allah, who are desirous of the pleasure of their Lord, the traces and lights of their greatness and goodness are visible and shining from their blessed faces, these qualities of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) are not only mentioned in the Holy Quran; but also in the books before it, the Torah, the Gospel.

Allah Almighty granted gradual advancement to the group of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and in the same way, the religion of Islam and the believers will gradually prevail and advance.

Their advancement is a source of joy for Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and a source of enmity for the disbelievers. Allah has promised these Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) forgiveness and a great reward.

Allah Almighty also said that He made the group of the Companions a moderate group. They will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) will be a witness over them. These Companions are those who follow and imitate the Prophet whose attributes are mentioned in the Torah and the Gospel. The Companions (ﷺ) who believed in him, took his company, supported him, and followed the Quran that was revealed to him. Those are the people (the Companions) who will achieve their goal and be successful.

Allah the Almighty has shown His mercy upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), upon his companions, the Muhajirin (emigrants), and the Ansar (helpers) who stood by him in times of difficulty, upon the believers who swore allegiance to the Prophet of Allah under the tree. Allah was pleased with them and sent down tranquility upon them. And upon the first of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), the Ansar (helpers) who helped them, and their followers. Allah was pleased with them and they were pleased with Allah. Allah has prepared for them Paradise in which they will abide forever. That is the great achievement, and these are the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them).

Allah revealed the Holy Quran, and the hair of the God-fearing Companions stood on end, their skin and hearts softened with the remembrance of Allah. When the Companions who believed in the verses of Allah heard these verses, they fell down in prostration, and remembered this Holy Being. Their sides remained far from their sleeping places. They called upon their Lord with fear and hope, and spent from what He had given them. So no soul knows what Allah has hidden for the comfort of their eyes, and what is with Allah is better and more lasting.

And this is for those who put their trust in their Lord, avoid major sins and indecencies, forgive when angered, have accepted the command of their Lord and have established prayer, their affairs are settled by mutual consultation, how many of these believing Companions are men who have fulfilled their promise to Allah and fulfilled their obligation, and how many are those who are waiting, and there has been no change in them, not even the smallest particle.

Allah will reward the truthful and punish the hypocrites if He wills, and forgive if He wills, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Is he who is engaged in worship during the hours of the night, prostrating, standing, fearing the Hereafter, hoping for the mercy of his Lord, then are the wise and the foolish equal? No!  The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon them) always adhered to and practiced faith and other qualities of faith, prayer, fasting, Hajj, Zakat, Jihad in the way of Allah, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, piety, piety, spending in the way of Allah, and sincerity of intention, etc., and their practice of mutual affection, love, compassion, and mercy was also constant, because Allah had made piety obligatory upon them, and they were also entitled to it and worthy of it.

The Statement of Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him)

Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that whoever wants to follow the path of religion should follow the path of those who have passed away from this world and they are the companions of Hazrat Muhammad (peace be upon him), who are the best section of this Ummah. Their hearts were pure, their knowledge was deep, and there was no pretense or pretense in them.

Allah Almighty had chosen them to be the companions of His Prophet (peace be upon him) and to spread the religion. Therefore, recognize their excellence and excellence, follow in their footsteps and hold fast to their morals and their character with all your might; for they were on the path of guidan.

Hazrat Ibn Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Allah Almighty looked at the hearts of all His servants for the first time and chose Muhammad (peace be upon him) from among them and sent him as His Messenger and gave him His special knowledge. Then He looked at the hearts of the people again and chose the companions for Him and made them the protectors of His religion and bearers of the responsibility of His Prophet (peace be upon him). Therefore, whatever the believers (i.e. the companions) consider good will be good in the sight of Allah, and whatever they consider bad will be bad in the sight of Allah. (Hilyat al-Awliya, number of translation: 84, al-Tafawa al-Dawsi, 1/376).

The Statement of Hazrat Ali (RA)

Hazrat Abu Iraqa says that one day I prayed Fajr prayer with Hazrat Ali (RA) and when he finished the prayer and sat facing the right, it seemed that he was restless and sad. Even when the sun rose a spear above the wall of the mosque, he prayed two rak’ahs, then turned his hand and said, “By Allah, I have seen the companions of Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH).

Today, there is no one like them. In the morning, their complexion was yellow, their hair was disheveled, and their bodies were covered in dust. On their foreheads was a mark (of prostration) as big as the mark on the knee of a goat. They would spend the whole night prostrating before Allah and standing up reciting the Quran, and they would find comfort in prostration and standing.

When morning came and they would remember Allah, they would sway like a windy day (or a storm).  At dawn (the tree sways) and he would cry so much that his clothes would get wet. By God, (his crying made it seem as if he had spent the night in heedlessness.) Then Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and was never seen laughing even softly after that, until the enemy of Allah, Ibn Muljam, the wicked, martyred him. (Hilyat al-Awliya, number 4, Ali ibn Abi Talib, 1/76).

Relationships between the Companions

The Four Caliphs (may Allah be pleased with them) in particular, and all the other Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and their families were not only kind and grateful to each other; but each was compassionate, kind, and fulfilled the rights of the other. Hundreds of hadiths and narrations have been narrated from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in the books of both parties, which express the general excellence, status, and greatness and piety of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and the special excellence, status, and piety of the three Caliphs.

This is not only proven by the reliable books of the Sunnis; but it is also in the basic and reliable books of the Shiites. It has been narrated from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), which he can never deny.
