Suicide and its prohibition

Suicide and its prohibition

Suicide is an argument for cowardice and lack of courage. It is an un-Islamic, immoral and illegal way for weak and hopeless people to escape from the problems and difficulties, trials and responsibilities of life. Unfortunately, at present, the trend of suicide among the deprived people of the whole world due to neglect of their responsibilities and lack of faith or weakness is increasing day by day. In Western countries, due to the chaos of the moral and social system, the proportion of suicide incidents has increased so much that now there is a call to recognize suicide as a private right of a person.

According to the statistics of the World Health Organization (WHO)

According to the statistics of the World Health Organization (WHO), one million people commit suicide every year in the world. This suicide rate is 16% in 100,000 people. Accordingly, one person commits suicide every 40 seconds in the world. The rate of deaths due to suicide in the world is one point eight percent. According to a survey, this rate is increasing rapidly.  India and China alone account for 30% of the world’s suicide deaths, which is a matter of great concern.

Prohibition of Suicide in the Word of God

Similarly, at one point, Allah explicitly forbids suicide by saying: “Do not kill yourselves” (An-Nisa: 29). At another point, He says: “Do not throw yourselves into destruction” (Al-Baqarah: 195).

There are many other such commands in the Holy Quran, from which it can be clearly understood that a person does not have the right to decide when to take his own life. Yes, it is the responsibility of a person to protect it and not to interfere with it.

How precious a human life is to God and how important its existence is in this world can be gauged from the fact that in the days of ignorance, people used to kill their children out of fear of poverty; so that they would be free from the burden of raising them; but Islam not only opposed this, but also declared this act forbidden and said: “And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Indeed, killing them is a great sin.” (Bani Israel: 31)

In another place, the same thing has been expressed as follows: “And do not kill your children for fear of lack of wealth. We provide for them and for you.” (An-An’am: 15).

Condemnation of suicide in the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)

In his statement of warning regarding the suicide is a strong threat. He said: “Whoever kills himself by strangling himself will also strangle himself in Hell, and whoever kills himself by stabbing himself will also be given the same punishment in Hell as stabbing himself.”  (Kanz-ul-Amal) means that one will not be relieved from the troubles and difficulties due to suicide; rather, the same punishment will be given in the Hereafter according to the thing and manner in which one commits suicide in this world; which is called Jazaman-ul-Juns-al-Amal.

Similarly, Hazrat Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Hazrat Tufail bin Umar and another person from his people also migrated to Madinah Tayyiba. Here this other person fell ill. Due to the severity of the pain, he could not bear it and he cut the joints of his fingers with a weapon.

The veins were cut and so much blood flowed that he died. Hazrat Tufail (may Allah be pleased with him) later saw him in a dream that he was in a better condition due to his faith and migration; but his hands were covered. Hazrat Tufail (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him in a dream, “What did your Lord deal with you?”  He said: “Allah Almighty has forgiven me by the blessings of faith and migration. Forgiveness has been granted, but it was said about my hands that “I will not correct what you have corrupted.” Hazrat Tufail narrated this dream to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), so he prayed: “O Allah! Forgive their hands too.” (Mishkat)

This shows that although committing suicide is a serious crime and a cause of very severe sin and punishment; but if the suicider ends in faith, then he will be forgiven and pardoned, and one should also pray for forgiveness and reward for the suicider, rather he is very much in need of it.

Causes of Suicide and their Prevention

It is true that the occurrence of disasters is not the same for everyone, some people are those who have the courage to endure even the greatest pain and some people are disturbed by a minor accident and fall into panic. However, the successful person in the journey of life is the one who bravely and courageously confronts the circumstances and, instead of giving up, shows proof of strength and independence.

If we think about it, one of the main and fundamental reasons for the increasing rate of suicide is distance from Islam and Islamic teachings. Allah Almighty puts His servants through trials to erase their sins and raise their ranks. Those who pass the test come under the shadow of Allah’s mercy and those who fail consider suicide as the way to salvation and not only do they cause their worldly loss; rather, they destroy their own hereafter.

A person should have complete trust in Allah and should also remember that the only one who can end all suffering and troubles is Allah Almighty. In such situations, the key role of the prominent people of the society, parents and guardians is to explain to the distressed, encourage them and provide them with all possible assistance; so that they do not feel alone.

By the way, there can be various reasons and causes for suicide; some of which are: financial difficulties, discord and disagreements in relationships, oppression and mistreatment, violence and misguidance, violation of rights, the practice of dowry and illegal demands, etc.

We believe that only those who are oppressed by circumstances are more inclined towards suicide; but it is a living fact that the only solution to this is “patience and steadfastness” and “strength of endurance”. And the greatest strength is the help of Allah with those who are patient.

How lowly and how deprived is it to turn away from such a reward and embrace a hellish act?! Men and women of society should also consider this aspect. We believe in the Hereafter, and there are good news of the rewards of Khusrawana for those who are patient and grateful. Turning away from the welfare of the Hereafter is against reason; therefore, by God! Before taking any step, consider whether it is beneficial or detrimental to the Hereafter and whether it will please or displease Allah and His Messenger.

Summary

This life is a great blessing of Allah Almighty and our entire existence is a trust of Him and to protect it to the extent possible is our responsibility and Islamic, natural, moral and human duty. From a jurisprudential point of view, this human life is a trust given by the Almighty God whose protection is necessary and necessary in any case. Be it the darkness of suffering and difficulties or the darkness of compulsions and despair, wasting this great divine trust in a moment through suicide is neither permissible in Islam nor advisable in the eyes of humanity. Therefore, any such act is not permitted in Islam that is purposeless, harmful to health or life and can endanger human existence and life. Rather, in order to save life, the use of such things has also been permitted at the time of need and to the extent necessary, which are actually unlawful and forbidden. Then, the means provided by Allah for man to protect his body and soul are unparalleled in any other creation. Despite this, if someone kills himself, it is a crime that deprives the criminal both in this world and the hereafter, and leaves him nowhere to live.
