The Reality of Dream
A person sometimes sees many things in a state of sleep that he cannot see in a state of wakefulness. In common usage, this is interpreted as the word dream. In the summary of interpretations, it is that in a dream, the soul leaves the body and travels in the upper and lower worlds, which it cannot see in waking life.
It should be called spiritual sense, the physical sense can only dominate the present, and the spiritual sense perceives and feels both the present and the absent, therefore, such circumstances and qualities are observed in a dream that greatly amaze the dreamer himself, sometimes joyful and sometimes terrifying images emerge in the mind, and with awakening, this whole story disappears.
The virtue and benefit of a good and excellent dream
In many places in the Quran, dreams have been mentioned in different forms, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has also explained it in some detail in the hadiths, which shows that the existence of dreams is a reality. Although the dreams of people other than the Prophets are not a legal proof, they are from the benefits of divinity and the blessings of prophet hood.
It is narrated from Anas that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: A good dream is one of the forty-six parts of prophet hood. This means the knowledge of prophet hood, that is, a righteous dream is one of the parts and parts of the knowledge of prophet hood. (Sahih Bukhari and Muslim) If we consider it, in this hadith, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has explained the virtue and benefit of a good and excellent dream and has called it a sign of prophet hood.

Dreams are of three types
It should be noted that dreams are of three types:
The first type is the thought of the self, meaning that the things that a person is busy with throughout the day and that dominate his heart and mind are seen in the form of dreams at night. For example, a person is busy with his professional work and his mind and thoughts are occupied with the thoughts and worries of only those things that are related to his professional work, then he sees the same things in his dream, or a person is engrossed in the thought of his beloved and the shadow of the same beloved is always on his mind, then the same beloved also dominates his dream world. In other words, the thing that dominates the mind and thoughts of a person in the waking world is what he sees in his dream. Such dreams have no validity.
The second type is a nightmare, this dream is actually a reflection of satanic influences. Since Satan has been the enemy of mankind since time immemorial, and just as he tries to mislead and disturb man in the waking world, he does not let man rest even in the state of sleep. Therefore, he uses various tactics to disturb and frighten man in dreams. Sometimes he appears in a frightening form and appearance, which makes the dreamer extremely afraid, sometimes he shows such dreams in which the sleeper sees his life being lost, such as seeing that he has been beheaded, etc.
Similarly, having a dream in which he takes a bath and sometimes because of it the prayer is missed or missed is a sign of satanic influences. Like the first type, this too is unreliable and uninterpretable. To protect against such frightening and bad dreams, the following supplication has been instructed in the hadith. “I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and punishment, from the evil of His servants, from the whisperings of the devils, and from their coming to me.” (Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi)
The third type of dream is that which has been called by Allah as good news. Allah Almighty gives good news to whomever He wishes among His servants in his dream and shows in the mirror of his heart, as signs and symbols, those things that are going to happen in the future or those that are related to the spiritual and mental growth and peace of mind of the believer. That servant is happy and feels refreshed in seeking the truth, and also has good faith and hope in Allah Almighty. This is the type of dream that is worthy of trust and interpretation and whose excellence and praise have been described in the Hadith. (Mazāhir-e-Haqq Jadid).
A good dream is a message of good tidings
A good dream is a message of good tidings from Allah Almighty that the servant may be happy and that dream may be a cause of his good behavior with Allah Almighty and a cause of increasing his gratitude to Allah. A bad dream is a reflection of the effects of Satan, meaning that a person is naturally troubled and saddened by a bad dream, which makes Satan very happy.
Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has instructed that whoever sees a bad and undesirable dream should turn to his left three times and seek refuge in Allah from Satan three times and change the side on which he was sleeping at the time of the dream. (Al-Mushka’ah: 394)
The second hadith states that when someone sees such a dream, he should not pay attention to it or tell it to an enemy or friend. By seeking refuge in Allah and saying the Tashahhud three times, God willing, he will be protected from the harmful effects of this bad dream.
The wisdom of not telling such a dream to an enemy or friend is that when the listener gives a bad interpretation in view of the apparent state of the dream, he will inevitably be subject to corrupt illusions. Various kinds of fears, whispers and various illusions and thoughts will arise in the heart and mind, which will disturb the person and affect his peace and tranquility. At the same time, it is also possible that the bad interpretation indicated by the listener will come true. Because dreams have a special effect in making a dream come true, that the interpretation given by the dreamer by the command of Allah Almighty becomes true.
A dream is on the feet of a bird until it is narrated to someone
Thus, Abu Razin Aqeeli says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “A dream is on the feet of a bird until it is narrated to someone, but when it is narrated to someone, it comes true.” (Al-Mishkaah: 396) “A dream is on the feet of a bird until it is narrated to someone, but when it is narrated to someone, it comes true.” Ali rajul taiir, meaning being on the feet of a bird, is actually an Arabic idiom that the Arabs use about any matter or thing that does not have stability.
It means that just as a bird does not usually stay in one place, but keeps flying and moving, and what is on its feet also does not stay in one place, but falls down with the slightest movement. Similarly, this matter and this thing also do not remain fixed and fixed in any one place.
Therefore, it has been said that the matter of a dream is also like this. As long as it is not explained to anyone and kept secret in one’s heart, it has no credibility and does not come true. But when it is explained to someone and as soon as its interpretation is given, it comes true according to that interpretation. Therefore, such a dream should not be mentioned in front of anyone. Although in a good dream the mind does not move towards unpleasant things, it should also not be described to an ignorant, enemy and incompetent person, because due to his wrong interpretation, the direction of the dream can change. However, there is no harm in telling it to people of knowledge, experts in dream interpretation and wise friends.
Hazrat Shah Waliullah Muhaddith Dehlavi, has described the following 9 types of good and better dreams
The renowned hadith scholar of the subcontinent, Hazrat Shah Waliullah Muhaddith Dehlavi, has described the following 9 types of good and better dreams:
(1) Seeing the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in a dream.
(2) Seeing Paradise or Hell in a dream.
(3) Seeing righteous servants and prophets (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in a dream.
(4) Seeing holy places like the House of Allah in a dream.
(5) Seeing future events in a dream, then that event happens exactly as he has seen it, for example, seeing a pregnant woman give birth to a boy, then the boy is actually born.
(6) Seeing past events in reality in a dream, for example, seeing someone die, then the news of his death comes.
(7) Seeing a dream that warns of a mistake, for example, dreaming that a dog is biting him. Its interpretation is that he is angry, reduce his anger.
(8) Seeing bright and delicious foods in a dream, such as drinking milk, honey and ghee.
(9) Seeing angels in a dream. (Hujjah Allah al-Balagah: 2/253)
Researchers have also explained that seeing the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in a dream does not mean that the person is subject to the same rules that are imposed on him in the event of actually seeing and being in the company of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), that is, neither will such a person be called a companion nor will it be necessary for him to act on what he heard from the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in his dream.
In any case, what can be said about the happiness of a person who has seen the Lord of the Worlds (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at least in a dream? This is a matter of great blessing and great happiness for him. Similarly, seeing another good and better dream is also a welcome thing and should be considered as good news from Allah that naturally makes a person’s heart and mind happy.
